Our members feel youth education is one of our most important duties.
Texas Youth Range Workshop
 Our flagship educational opportunity!
Youth,
age 14 -18, are eligible to participate in this week-long,
hands-on workshop. Participants are exposed to actual land
management practices and decisions through field trips to ranches and a
wildlife management area. These field trips bring out facts on
goals of land ownership and the responses of vegetation to practices
conducted for livestock, wildlife, recreation, and rangeland
restoration. All examples will be real-life applications.
The camp is headquartered on the Texas Tech University-Junction campus.
Applications will be accepted until 40 participants have been selected.
SRM’s Masonic Range Science Scholarship
 The Society for Range Management (SRM) Masonic-Range Science Scholarship
offers financial assistance and recognition to a high school senior,
college freshman or college sophomore planning to major in/presently
majoring in range science and/or closely related field. The recipient
of the scholarship must be planning to attend or be currently in
attendance at a college or university with a range science program. Applicants
must be sponsored by a member of the Society for Range Management
(SRM), the National Association of Conservation Districts (NACD), or
the Soil and Water Conservation Society (SWCS). The SRM Masonic
Range Science Scholarship Committee will select the recipient(s)
and announce their selection at the SRM Annual Meeting held in February
each year.
- Scholarship is open to high school seniors, college freshman and/or sophomores
- Completed application must be submitted by January 8th.
SRM’s High School Youth Forum
One
of the goals of members at the section level is to recognize high
school students that have demonstrated a real interest in range and
other related natural resource areas. These youth have perhaps shown
their interest in related activities at a range or natural resources
camp, in 4-H, or FFA. Once interest is observed, these youth then can
be considered to serve as delegates to the HSYF, representing their
respective SRM Sections.
With this in mind, the goals of the HSYF are:
- provide insight for these students concerning the function and workings of the Society
- provide opportunities to meet Society members
- provide a format that encourages thinking and enhancement of communicative skills
- provide an opportunity to learn about range management and future careers through interaction with Society professionals
- provide an opportunity to learn about the ecology and natural resources of the Annual Meeting site
- provide an atmosphere that fosters camaraderie, friendship, and lasting relationships
To
achieve these goals, various activities are conducted which include an
orientation session, an ecological field trip, a professional
interaction dinner, a business meeting, a student luncheon, a conflict
resolution workshop, and the popular Forum Paper Presentation session.
High Plains Range Camp
 Sponsored
by our neighbors to the north, the Oklahoma Section, the High Plains Range Camp is open to students from Colorado, Kansas, New
Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas. The Camp is based out of Kenton
OK.
Students will explore the rangelands of the five-state
area, and will have the opportunity to learn more about range and
wildlife management, conservation planning, plant identification,
conflict resolution and leadership development. Integrated into each
subject will be how to use new technology. Students are
taught by members of the five-state area of the Society for Range
Management along with personnel from USDA Natural Resources
Conservation Service, Oklahoma State University, Oklahoma Department of
Wildlife Conservation, and Conservation
Texas Brigades
 The
Texas Brigades are a wildlife-focused leadership development program
for high school youth (ages 13-17). There are four different
camps to hone your wildlife habitat management, communication and other
life skills. The four camps are:
- Bobwhite Brigade (bobwhite quail)
- Buckskin Brigade (white-tailed deer)
- Feathered Forces (wild turkey and other game birds)
- Bass Brigade (all bass species)
